"Fashion for chubby" – what does mollig actually mean? Looking it up in the dictionary, you find the following:
comfortable - cozy - pleasant - nice - warm
fleshy - obese - clumsy - bulky
plump - powerful - stocky - rough
Is a chubby woman clumsy and bulky or cozy and warm?
Couldn’t it also be elegant and cool?
"Fashion for chubby" was originally introduced as a euphemism for fat and is meant to verbally mask this fact. The same applies to most garments advertised under this term. But why actually?
Is fat something negative? Actually not, rather the opposite, as you can see in everyday language...
A big compliment; a big kiss; thick friends; a big bank account;
So why is fat, when it comes to bodies, strangely negatively charged? It’s a social phenomenon of our time. But the good thing is, times change and with them perception and ideals. Maybe in the future, when we all get taller, there will be special "clothing for bony" too.
So how can a term do justice to all body shapes and especially to the most diverse people? It can’t!
But since fashion doesn’t do without labels and, like language, offers the possibility for playful distinction and grouping, we ask ourselves: how can we push "women’s fashion for chubby" out of everyday use and replace it with something new?
